Congratulations to Donte Greene

Former Towson Catholic Basketball Player
Donte Greene Joins the NBA

Donte Greene, Baltimore native and 2007 graduate of Towson Catholic High School, was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft.  The Grizzlies immediately made a trade that landed the 6 foot 10 forward with the Houston Rockets.  Greene declared himself eligible for the draft after completing one year at Syracuse University where he let the Orange in scoring, averaging 17.7 points per game.  Greene was the 28th player picked in June 26th’s  NBA draft, but was not in attendance at Madison Square Garden to hear his name announced by Commissioner David Stern.  Instead, Greene celebrated with friends and family at a local Baltimore bowling alley.

According to Syracuse University website, “Greene was a second team All-BIG EAST Conference selection and earned a spot on the BIG EAST Conference All-Rookie Team. He was the conference rookie of the week five times. He earned a spot on the league's weekly honor roll once. Greene was a first team National Association of Basketball Coaches pick and made the United States Basketball Writers of Association District II squad. He was a Rivals.com Second Team Freshman All-American and a collegehoops.net All-Freshman honorable mention selection.”

Greene has deep roots in the Baltimore area, where he lived for several years until he was 8 years old. His family moved often, but he returned to Baltimore when he was 12 years old and soon after began playing for the Towson Catholic High School Owls. While at Towson Catholic, Donte Greene was selected to play on McDonalds All American High School Team consisting of the best high school basketball players in the country.

Towson Catholic High School’s  Josh Pratt coached Greene in his final two years at Towson Catholic.   He says he has received nearly a dozen calls from NBA teams asking about the former student.

Donte Greene was quoted in the Baltimore Sun saying “Growing up as a kid, your dream is to play in the NBA. Having that dream and knowing what I’m capable of doing, I felt like it was time.” Greene follows in the footsteps of Towson Catholic High School’s former player Carmelo Anthony, who currently plays for the Denver Nuggets.

Congratulations to Jordan Holley

Jordan Holley, TC junior, has been selected for the Tavis Smiley Foundation Leadership Academy.  He is one of 200 young people from across the country  who were selected.  Jordan will spend the week of August 14 - 18 at UCLA working with well-known leaders, including Dr. Cornel West from Harvard.  Each student in the program will develop a project to be implemented in their communities when they return.  Congratulations, Jordan!  We wish you great success in the academy and look forward to hearing about your project when you come home to TC. Jordan participated in the Disney Dreamers’ leadership workshop in January 2008, having been chosen from thousands of applicants.  He was the only student from Baltimore County to be selected.

Knott Foundation Grant to TC

The Knott Foundation has awarded $50,000 to Towson Catholic High School to support the implementation of the Marian Program, a resource program for students with learning needs.  After submitting a lengthy proposal and hosting a Knott Foundation board member for a site visit, we received the notice yesterday that we have received the award.  This is a great honor for TC.  Hundreds of proposals are submitted each year to the Knott Foundation by organizations seeking funding for special projects and programs.  Students in the new Marian Program must be able to manage the regular college prep curriculum, with added support from a Resource Specialist during the school day.  With the support of this funding, TC will be able to offer the services that parents need as they seek support for their students who may have learning differences.

Distinctive Scholars, Class of 2008

Top TC graduating seniors were recognized at the Archdiocesan Distinguished Scholars Convocation at Mercy High School on April 29.  Christine Bradley,  Mary Schmidt, and Carolyn Wasilewski received medals and certificates from Dr. Ron Valenti and Bishop Mitchell Rozanski.  The students were joined by their parents, friends, and TC administrators at the Vespers service and reception following in the new arts center.

New Alumni Director

Mrs. Carol Jackson Short has been appointed as the new Alumni Director for Towson Catholic High School. Carol comes to Towson Catholic from NDP where she was Middle Level Assistant Principal for 12 years.  Prior to her tenure at Notre Dame, she led the Middle School at Maryvale Prep, where she handled the responsibilities of Athletic Director as well.  Carol worked in the Baltimore County Schools in her early career in education, in addition to working with the BC Recreation Council.

Carol comes “back home” as she returns to our campus.  Although not an alumna of TC, she is an alumna of Immaculate Conception School, where her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Kunkel Jackson taught for more than 20 years.  Immaculate Conception parish was her family’s parish as the Jackson’s lived in the Towson area for many years.   She keeps contact with her classmates from ICS on a regular basis. Carol now lives in New Freedom, PA near her son John, daughter Jan and their families.  Her son Paul lives on the West Coast.

We look forward to welcoming Carol officially on July 1.  I know she is anxious to meet our alumni, faculty and staff, students, Parish team, and TC Board.
