Reading Material:

We have a reading series, published by Scott Foresman, called Seeing is Believing.   It is an excellent anthology of literature, rich in vocabulary.  Students will spend their time in whole group instruction, smaller reading groups and independent activities.  The literature is theme-related.  Reading skills are taught as they occur in the reading material.  Students’ independent work relates to the focus or outcome of the lesson.

Reading outcomes include discussion, predicting events, cause and effect, problem solving,  critical thinking, identifying the main idea,  classifying,  sequencing,  story mapping,  character studies,  vocabulary and more.  We will also use a variety of graphic organizers to record and respond to material that was read and discussed.

Novels

Along with our literature book, Seeing is Believing, we will read these novels this year:

The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Carlson.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr.

Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White.

Other titles may be sent home for parental review.
