In 1st grade, the students primarily use visual software with lots of color and graphics such as KidSpiration & KidPix.     Mastering the mouse is  important at this age (click & drag, l/r click and & doubleclicking etc.).       We will also be learning keyboarding skills (home row, capitalization) and font formatting.     Just wait until their "All About Me" PowerPoint presentations are finished!

If you would like to see an overview of all of the areas we will touch upon, go to the HOME page and click on the link entitled "What We Will Learn".

See what we did in class!

Keyboarding Skills
I realize the importance of establishing good typing habits when the children are young.    I  am teaching the children the home row and proper finger placement for their tiny little hands.    The 1st Graders were so excited to hear that even the EIGHTH GRADERS don't know how to do this properly.    Some even volunteered to help me teach 8th grade computer.

Our Towson Community
To reinforce the 1st Grade's lessons on our community, we made a map of "Things that we would find in Towson!"     A couple of dinosaurs snuck their way into a few students' pictures, but who doesn't love those prehistoric animals?!

Creation:

With a page of the children's illustrated bible on the 8' projection screen, we read the Story of Creation.    The children located a graphic symbolizing each of the 7 days of God's work.

Where are they found?
1st graders are learning grouping.    We used Kidspiration software to help the children distinguish that certain things may belong in more than one category.    Here, we found "nouns" that are found in water, on land, or in both water & land.
